Who Are the Stanley Cup Predictions?
Avalanche of Colorado (+375)
Going season 2022-23, the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche are the club to beat. We’ll see if they can maintain their dominance from 2021-22. They did lost two significant players in Darcy Kuemper and Nazem Kadri.
Sure, they still have top-tier players like MacKinnon, Makar, Landeskog, and Toews, but we all know that depth and goaltending help teams win. He was one of the top goalies in the NHL last season, no matter how you look at it. Pavel Francouz and Alexandar Georgiev, on the other hand, were not. For a reason, both are career backups. Trusting them to split the crease may be a major issue for Colorado, especially in the playoffs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have the same dilemma. The Leafs have one of the league’s best scoring cores, and their defense has improved from a few years ago, but they took a step back in net in 2022-23. On paper, at least.
Instead of staying in Toronto, Jack Campbell chose to sign a five-year, $25 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers. So GM Kyle Dubas brought in Matt Murray, who was regarded surplus on a terrible Ottawa team, and Ilya Samsonov, who the Washington Capitals did not qualify as an RFA. Dubas obviously hopes that at least one of these two can regain their former form, but there’s a reason they were both permitted to depart their respective teams.

The Leafs and Matthews have yet to discuss a contract (that can happen until on July 1, 2023), but there is concern that the 60-goal scorer in ’21-22 will bolt for another team. They have the best player in the world in Connor McDavid, who scored 123 points in 80 games last year. The Oilers are already a decent chance to be competitive in 2022-23. The one problem they had in ’21-22 was goaltending. Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen were abysmal last year, with a combined.905 save % that ranked 13th in the regular season.
GM Ken Holland attempted to solve this by signing free agent Jack Campbell. Campbell had a.916 save percentage, a 2.50 GAA, and a.600 quality start percentage in three seasons with the Leafs.
