Vidya Pillai, a winner of many international medals and a former champion of the World Team Snooker Championship, has today advanced to the final of the World Women’s 6Red Snooker Championship 2022, which is being held at the High End Snooker Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She finished in second place, which earned India a silver medal, but Thailand’s Waratthanun Sukritthanes was ultimately the winner of the competition.
In addition, another Indian lady named Varshaa Sanjeev earned a bronze medal for her team by competing in the competition and making it all the way to the semifinals, where she was ultimately defeated by the eventual winner, Waratthanun, by a score of 1-3.
Vidya had a fantastic performance throughout the entirety of the competition. She won every single one of her matches in the group stage, with the exception of the one that was decided by a tiebreaker and was played against Ip Wan In Jacque of Hong Kong. Despite suffering the setback, Vidya improved her overall average and finished first in group B, earning her the fifth seed in the knockout round.
Vidya made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the knockout stage, where she faced off against one of the competitors for the title, Mongolia’s Narantuya Bayarsaikhan. Vidya had incredible mental fortitude to emerge victorious against such a formidable rival, ultimately winning the match 3-2 and securing the medal for India.
Vidya defeated Ploychompoo Laokiatphong of Thailand in the semifinals by a score of 9-0. Vidya won the first three frames in a row. In the end, she had to settle for silver after suffering an 0-4 loss against Waratthanun.
On the other hand, Vidya’s sparring partner at home, Varshaa Sanjeev, also finished in first place in her group C, which allowed her to face Tatiana Istomina in the quarterfinals. Sanjeev defeated Istomina 3-0, which ensured that India would win another medal.
IBSF President Mr. Mubrak Al-Khayarin, Vice President Mr. Jim Leacy, Madam Chow Pui Hee, the Group Managing Director of Samaiden Group Brand, and the Deputy President of MSBF Dato’ Mohd. Anis Hisham were present at the award event. Madam Chow Pui Hee was also in attendance.
